The Road

About two weeks ago I saw Brick. What a great film. Such a clever story: private eye film noir clothed in a modern SanFran highschool setting. Witty dialogue, delightful camerawork... a joy if you're a fan of the noir (I am). During the commentary track the director explained how the movie came about: He saw the Coen Brothers' Miller's Crossing, started reading Dashiell Hammett novels (the guy that invented pulp/noir, back in the 30's), graduated from film school in '96, had a script twelve months later, and then spent SIX years getting the money to make Brick.

So I went to Barnes & Noble, bought The Thin Man and The Maltese Falcon, and read them in about 5 days. I'm in love with noir! I can't help it.

...

Last night I finished The Road, this year's Pulitzer Prize winner. I took 10 minutes to read the last page, letter by letter, delaying the end. And then another 10 minutes to yell at the author for not telling us more. And then I had to turn on NPR.

The Chugach Range

I took this about 3 weeks ago, when the weather was still below freezing. Not anymore. Anchorage is, right now, one big, brown, wet puddle. All those nice flat flakes are turning to mush.
